Pink Pillbox Hike Guide: A Scenic West Oahu Adventure

The Pink Pillbox Trail, also known as the Maili Pillbox Hike or Pu’u o Hulu Hike , is one of West Oahu’s rewarding hikes, offering panoramic ocean, coastal and valley views and a unique outdoor adventure on the island’s less touristy side. It is named Pink Pillbox because there are a few historical pillboxes at the top and one of them is pink.
It’s one of my favorite hikes because it can be quick to do and while the uphill ascent can be steep at times giving you a bit of a workout, the view from the top makes it all worthwhile. Additionally, there are areas of shade on this trail.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this short yet moderately challenging hike is worth the effort.

Pink Pillbox Hike Facts

  • Duration:  Approximately 2 hours round trip
  • Difficulty:  Easy to moderate
  • Highlights: Multiple pillboxes, breathtaking ocean views, Instagram-worthy spots
  • Dog friendly: Yes. Although it’s still advised to go either early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid death by heat exhaustion for your dog. Hawaii is getting a lot hotter these days due to global warming and our furbabies feel the heat from the ground more intensely. They don’t catch the tradewind breezes like they do. Always pack a bottle of water for your dog so they can cool off.

What to Expect on the Pink Pillbox Trail

You find roadside parking and you may see other cars parked there as it’s a popular hike. Finding the hike entrance isn’t obvious at first, but once you park and look for the entrance, the high shrubs open to show a steep chunky trail. You cannot miss it. It is the only area where the shrubs are clearly parted. You might find a smaller trail parting – I haven’t tried it- but it’s my feeling it eventually meets the main trail.

The trail for the most part is obvious. I’ve been told to stay to the right whenever in doubt. And later I met a hiker saying that all paths on this hike eventually lead to the pillboxes, so not to fret.
The hike begins with a relatively moderate to steep incline, and the loose dirt and rocky terrain can make it slippery, especially on dry days. Be careful of your footing and falling boulders.
Take your time, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and be prepared for a good workout. There are two gorgeous and giant trees with large roots,. which remind me a bit of the large overgrown trees at Siem Reap. They make wonderful spots to catch your wind, have a snack and catch your breath.
Tip: Please take your trash with you. Always leave these trails better than how you found them.  There are wild mountain goats and boar up there, even birds and eating trash and plastic bags will kill them.  Please respect the grounds and the wildlife there. From the trail, you’ll see the Maili Community development below. The westside of Oahu has largely been rural but is slowly developing.  As you go higher, you’ll see the mountain ridges snaking deep into the valley. It’s a beautiful sight.

As you ascend, you’ll encounter multiple pillboxes, each offering a different vantage point for breathtaking views. They’re a little run down, but some are decorated with graffiti to make it feel visited. There’s a pink pillbox that houses a Christmas tree and a wonderful mural inside.  It’s the perfect spot to rest, snap photos, and take in the West side’s beaches and coastline’s beauty.
